Football Crazy

It's the FIFA football World Cup in a few weeks, and we're getting ready to support our teams. Our school in South Africa is close to the action, and these reports came from LAL Cape Town students who tried to get tickets...

LAL South Africa: World Cup Fever

The beginning of the World Cup is getting closer and closer and all football fans are getting more than crazy. What a fabulous and indescribable feeling!!!

It was planned a fire test with U20 national teams of SA vs. Nigeria and Brazil vs. Ghana before the World Cup is going to start. The perfect opportunity to visit the stadium!!! More than 20 students of the LAL South Africa School in Main Road bought tickets - for an extremely economical price by the way - to participate in this first big football event at the “CPT Stadium”. We walked from the LAL School to the Stadium, a walk along the promenade which I recommend to everyone.  The stadium is one of the most amazing stadiums I have ever seen. The view from outside and inside the stadium is hard to beat: the sea, Table Mountain… I said also the view from inside, because the transparent walls give a great view of the landscape. The atmosphere in the stadium was wonderful.

Everyone was happy to be there. The students had a lot of fun joining the “la ola” and supporting their teams. What a pity that SA lost vs. Nigeria. I look forward to going there again for the WORLDCUP!!! Hopefully I will be able  to watch Spain winning a game in there…

Mission Impossible: Buying Tickets

We could never imagine how difficult it would be to get tickets for the World Cup from the FIFA official office in Cape Town. The first ones started to queue the day before at nine o’clock in the evening. Crazy Colombians, they really love this game!!! They got the numbers 86 until 90… I was there at three o’clock in the morning and there were already 300 people queuing!!!  We slept on the pavement. My blanket was the Colombian flag and my pillow a plastic bottle of water. It was not that bad until it started to rain, JESUS! We survived the night, but the morning got even worse! The doors opened at 9 am. In the first three hours only about 20 people could buy tickets, what a shame!!! The computer system broke down every 15 min. Everyone was screaming, upset and extremely angry!!! The Police came to take control of the situation and the media were looking for the best shot. Still waiting to get into the ticket centre we were able to get our hand on a newspaper with the headline of the day. After 15 hours of waiting I finally got my tickets. The Colombian guys queued for 21 hours. Near to a new world record!!! Anyways, mission accomplished: WE GOT TICKETS!!!
