CRB checks for LAL Torbay Host Homes

Why do I need to think about CRB checks?

From 1st January 2008 LAL Torbay has required the main contact in each Host Home (the person who signs the Host Home contract) to have a current, enhanced, Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

What does the main contact need to do now?

If you already have an enhanced level CRB check that was prepared in the last two years, then you can simply show us your form.

If you do not already have an enhanced level CRB check, you will need to apply for one.

You cannot apply directly to the Criminal Records Bureau, but we can help you submit an application through an ‘umbrella’ body called United Medicare. The umbrella body currently makes a charge of £45 for this service. Why has LAL made this change?

The Children Act 2004 has resulted in tightened procedures for organisations which deal with children and ‘vulnerable adults’.

We wish to increase the security of our students, and have been advised by our accrediting body, English UK, that we should insist on CRB checks on Hosts. We have introduced this requirement in advance of the introduction of compulsory vetting for all Hosts in all schools in the near future, under the new Independent Safeguarding Authority. CRB checks now will greatly speed up applications for this compulsory vetting.

Will there be more changes in 2010?

There may be further changes in 2010, because the new Independent Safeguarding Authority is expected to start requiring further registrations. We will contact you again to explain these new arrangements as and when they become necessary.
