Being a host home is a rewarding experience. You’ll meet students from all over the world and get to know them well as you help them to settle in and practise their English. Our students want to feel a welcome addition to the home. We have many host homes who love hosting our students, and we are sure that you will too.
We offer good rates of pay for accommodating our students, and this money is paid to you weekly directly to your bank account, so you never have to wait a long time to be paid.
Our team of welfare staff are on call 24 hours a day to answer our dedicated local phone number.
We offer an action-packed schedule for young students, including planned excursions every Saturday and an interesting range of excursions for adults. The school building is open three evenings per week for teenage students and a range of activities are provided for them.
We are proud of our reputation and strive for excellence in everything we do. We use fully qualified teachers and are accredited by the British Council, which inspects us regularly. We take our responsibilities to our students and Host Families seriously.
Every year a large number of households apply to host our students; we will use up to 500 hosts registered in any given year. Not all those who apply to host will be accepted and the recruiting process for all hosts is outlined below:
Anyone who wants to be a Host Home starts by filling in an application form and sending it to LAL Torbay’s Accommodation Department, which manages Host registration and the allocation of students.
Once an application form has been received from a prospective family we will send you a Host Home Contract and Host Home Manual, and,a member of staff will then arrange a home visit for an informal interview with you and a check on the suitability of the house. During this visit we will be happy to answer any questions you have about hosting.
We will insist that the head of the household shows us a valid enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure (which we will help you obtain, if you do not already have one) - more information here, and we may obtain references for families from Social Services for the peace of mind of our clients. It is, however, rare that we are advised that a family would be unsuitable to host students.
We will write to you to tell you whether we have been able to accept your application. When you are accepted, you will remain on our register unless you ask to be removed or, in exceptional circumstances, if you are in breach of the Host Home Contract.
